This piece is digital art I made of my character in DnD. He’s using an Ice Beam to attack a large monster in an arctic fishing town. I go to DnD sessions every week and like to draw a memorable moment until the next one for my own enjoyment.
I made this piece on my phone in an app called “Infinite Painter” using only my fingers, time and brushes. It’s taken many years of practice, experimentation, and self-teaching to get to where I am in terms of digital art in this way. I have been using this unique method of illustration since I was a child. While I can easily draw by traditional means, a finger and a phone screen feel very natural to me.
The process I take for making these pieces can be outlined in simple steps that aren’t always followed in the suggested order:
First, I play DnD and have fun. Memorable moments come along as I play.
After the session, I make wild searching sketches of the most memorable components of my mental image to jot down the idea of what I want to draw. After that, I refine them to make simple linework with cleaner lines over the week following. This is usually the part that takes the longest as it defines the shapes of everything afterward.
Next, I add and tinker with colors, filling in outlines before removing the linework’s opacity or erasing them completely. The last thing I’ll do, if I feel the need to, is add shading or lighting, but this isn’t always the case.
Each time I do this, I practice my artistry and come out with a memory preserved digitally to come back to and enjoy through the lens of my art style.
