This is a design project I created for an assignment in my Interactive Design class. It is an analysis of the color and typography of two iPhone applications and a website.
The applications I chose were “Tower Fortress” by Nitrome and the Settings app by Apple.
The website I chose to review was “dnd5e.wikidot.com”.
My process was fairly simple. First, I decided what applications or websites I wanted to cover.
I chose “Tower Fortress” because I enjoy the game often, and it has a very unique style. Next was the Settings app on my iPhone, which I found to have subtle but clever design features worth noting.
Lastly was “dnd5e.wikidot.com”, I visit this wiki site often as I play DnD often. Rules are hard to memorize, but this site makes looking through them and learning about the tabletop game pleasant for the eyes.
After capturing screenshots of these subjects, I placed them in Photoshop and started taking note of the design features of each, wrapping the screenshot in the device the screenshot was taken on, and constructing a bit of background of matching colors to almost emulate the design choices of the subject.
I wanted to avoid having a simple, uninteresting fact sheet about visible design choices, so I chose to offset the phone screenshots from the center and created visibly distinctive, colorful markers that contrasted against what was behind them to help point out what I was analyzing.
It’s worth noting that during a critique, the markers had to be livened up and given brighter, more contrasting colors. I also made the text larger and rearranged the markers to help the visual association to the text meant to correlate with the marker.
In the making of this project, I learned how to more effectively and efficiently express information visually, and the complexities of Photoshop.
