This is a project I had done in my Ui class, where I learned more about designing in Figma and became proficient with it’s graphical and collaborative design tools.
The project was to make an app for a restaraunt, either fictional or real. I chose a restaraunt near the dorm I lived in named “Okinawa” as I loved their steak Hibachi.
Point is I liked the restaraunt, and I had picked it for that reason.
I began designing by first picking a color palette. The stark black, white and red, monochromatic palette on their physical menus caught my eye, so I stuck with it to keep the visuals simple, consistent with the restaraunt, and precise, especially since I had learned by that point that some of my previous works were sort of overwhelming to the eye.
I decided to add traditional japanese framing in bright red to liven up the otherwise dull black screens, also including subtle visual language that it surrounded all elements within the page, and that if you didn’t see it end, there was probably more to see if you scrolled down.
I also implemented a caligraphic brush-stroke display font, so as to subtly build the japanese asthetic that I had noticed implemented when I visited the location and researched the website.
Adding some helpful functions like a home button, menu button, and cart/order button to move between screens at the bottom, as well as minding the top row for phone notches and other baked-in UI functions it started to really come together as a proper app!
Overall, I had a very fun time doing this project. I even got to learn new things about a different culture while creating this app!
For those inclined, below is a link to the semi-functional Figma prototype.
